Penobscot Expedition launched from Boston.

July 20, 1779

The military and naval expedition is directed against a newly-established fort in Castine, Maine. An attack on July 28, 1779, is only partially successful because of lack of cooperation by the fleet and the siege is abandoned on August 20, 1779. The expedition is considered a great failure and, according to records of the General Court, “courts martial followed.”
